The game works like chain tag. One person is “it”. They begin to tag others. If you are caught, you hold hands with the person who tagged you, forming a chain. But whenever four children form a chain, the chain splits in the middle, creating two pairs. The advantage is that no less athletic children will be dragged along by the others and possibly be held responsible for breaking the chain. The disadvantage is that the whole group does not have to work together.

This is a pretty cool twist on an old favorite-more teamwork and strategy! The rule about the chain breaking keeps everyone running and nobody feeling left out or like they can’t play. It really is a great and equitable way to make tag in any game accessible to all abilities. It’s good for competition and co-operation, and perfect for mixed-age or mixed-ability groups who want an active, inclusive game!
